The following reasons for choosing and remaining in plural marriage were compiled from essays written by 95 contemporary plural wives, as included in the publication, Voices in Harmony
The all-encompassing reason is individual religious conviction.
I. PERSONAL REASONS
1. To increase personal and spiritual growth and fulfillment.
2. To enjoy more freedom and develop independence.
3. To obey a personal revelation and/or testimony.
4. To experience the joy of close female companionship and bonding with sisterwives.
5. To realize true joy.
II. FAMILY REASONS
6. To share family responsibilities.
7. To provide the same blessings for her children that she experienced when growing up in a happy plural family.
8. To increase one’s posterity and the circle of a loving family.
9. To give a woman more options to be sealed to a “righteous man.”
10. To fulfill the requirement that for a marriage to be eternal, it has to be a “celestial” plural marriage.
III. RELIGIOUS REASONS
11. To better serve God and obey His commandments.
12. To bring us closer to God and instill a greater desire to become as He is.
13. To gain a greater appreciation and understanding of the life and sacrifice of the Savior.
14. To live so as to gain greater eternal rewards and blessings.
15. To qualify for exaltation in the highest level of the Celestial Kingdom.
